standby
Location – Durham
Salary £30,430 - £35,800 (depending on experience)
About the role
We’re looking for someone to join our Water Networks team as a Distribution Technician. This is a role where no two days are the same, and where you’ll make a real difference to our customers and the performance of our water network.
As a Distribution Technician, you’ll work across the Wear area, responding to and resolving customer and network issues. You’ll be part of a customer‑focused team committed to delivering excellent service while helping the business achieve its goals. Your day‑to‑day work will involve providing face‑to‑face technical support, identifying leaks and faults, and spotting any potential issues that need further attention or escalation to our Distribution Maintenance Services teams.
The role operates in a fast‑paced and dynamic environment where flexibility is key. Health and Safety will be central to everything you do, both for your own wellbeing and for the safety of your colleagues and the wider community. You’ll play an important part in maintaining and operating our water network to a high standard, working to strict water quality requirements, reducing leakage, protecting supplies, and ensuring we meet our environmental commitments. It’s a challenging and rewarding opportunity that places you at the heart of our network operations.
We believe strongly in empowering our people, and you’ll be supported every step of the way with the training and once you are confident, you’ll take part in an operational standby rota.
About you
We’re looking for someone who brings a solid understanding of the day‑to‑day operation of both domestic and strategic water networks, ideally with experience managing issues across these areas. A good working knowledge of above‑ground assets, such as water pumping stations and impounding service reservoirs, will really help you hit the ground running.
Strong communication and customer service skills are essential, as you’ll often be the face of the business when dealing with customers and operational colleagues. This role suits someone who enjoys working flexibly in a fast‑paced 24/7 environment and is confident making decisions independently. You’ll frequently be working alone, using your initiative to make quick, informed choices, and we want you to feel empowered to think smarter and trust your judgement.
If you thrive on problem‑solving and enjoy the satisfaction of resolving issues out in the field, you’ll feel right at home here. As the role involves travel across the area, a full UK driving licence is required.
